Munich on Ice

Every year the fountain at Karlsplatz is switched off and an ice rink appears on the site. I was passing by there last night and stopped to watch. There were plenty of confident skaters on display but one young lad looked like he had consumed to much glühwein before strapping on his skates. He kept falling over and banging his head (or so it appeared from where I was standing) but it didn't seem to bother him. For the more timid or less experienced the rink comes complete with little friendly polar bears on skis that they can hang onto while they find their feet.

For those of us with more sense who prefer to watch while others crack their skulls, twist their knees and lose various appendages under skates, the rink also comes with a wurst and glühwein stall and a covered viewing platform.
