Synagogues and Machine Tools

A New Synagogue

The Orthodox Jewish community in Munich opened a new synagogue and community centre in Jakobsplatz two years ago. Now Munich's smaller liberal Jewish community is also planning a new synagogue to be designed by celebrity architect Daniel Libeskind.

The Jewish community which numbered 12,000 before the war has recovered dramatically in recent years as Jews from the former Soviet Union have emigrated. Now there are more than 9,000 living in the city, making it the second largest Jewish community in Germany.

A Deepening Recession

Mark Mardell, the BBC's Europe Editor, has another story from Germany on his blog. As Germany enters recession Mardell looks at the implications for Detlef Fendt, who has spent forty years working for Daimler in Berlin.
